Barb,
I would talk to your childs phycologist if your son has one about hypnosis and see if you can get a referal to a doctor that does it. There is no harm in having a consultation. It may not work but you will never know unless you try!! I will say prayers for you.
In fact I may do a bit of research into this area myself. Let me know what you find out.
Here are some links that might help you with some info. It's not very much:

I disagree...and I don't think you are really understanding...this is not the case with my son.......he WANTS to try new things and just can't bring himself to be able to do it......he trys....I watch his hands shake when trying to put pizza to his mouth......I hear him when he says...."mmmm pizza good" So it's not because he doesn't like it..nor because I MAKE him eat something he doesn't like...that is just cruel....it is because he can't get past whatever it is in his personality that keeps him from being able to TOLERATE it.
And yes I would expect it to work under certain situations done properly....maybe not in your case because it was a forced issue.... or all cases but I have read and heard of it being successful in some.
My son is 3yrs old and had sever Oral tactile issues. His O.T. put him on an Oral Sensory Diet and it has helped a great deal. He used a vibrating teether to bite down on right before eating and a soft rubber vibrator for his face which he didn't like. I found a wood mini facial massager at Cost Plus for .00 and my son loved rubbing it on his face. Now he is willing to try some new foods. He still wont eat any pasta or rice but it's a work in process
I would think that Hypnosis would only work if your child has a good comprehension of speech or Sign language so he could understand what is being said to him during the process. Good luck!!!!
The reason hypnosis works in helping people to lose weight, quit smoking, or even recover repressed childhood memories is they know what part of the brain controls that function. With autism it is not that clear cut. And if the eating part is really a sensory issue then I don't see how hynosis is gonna make them suddenly like certain types of textures. Also how would you do a hypnosis on a child that is non verbal?
Tammy
HI Cookie....
Thanks for your input on the OT.....we have tried a few things like that with Andy.....and I think it helped him get over some of the issues he has with touching and we also did the rice and pasta to play with hoping he would try it......but so far not.....Andy does try some things new....not very often, but as soon as it hits his mouth he spits it out immediately....I don't think he even gets to taste it...We also have a the massager for the face and a vibrating toothbrush....which took some getting use to. But works out well now. And we are doing a scrub-brushing technique with him as well......I will have to look more into the diet.....something new to try.....
Tabitha .....My son isn't non-verbal......He understand and speaks very well. And I don't think it is a matter of him suddenly liking a texture but more being able to TOLERATE it long enough to see if he likes the taste of whatever it is.
Hypnosis doesn't work on every average adult but you expect it to work on a kid that has autism? You don't have to like your next door neighbor that is a pain in a butt. But you do have to tolerate them. But under your scenario the reason I don't like applesauce is I can't tolerate it long enough. Which is not true. I don't like apples. And when I was younger we had to eat it.
Tammy
Hi everyone.......It has been awhile since I have posted but I do come back time to time to read......lots has been happening here I see.....Lots of new people!!!
Anyway.....my Andy has been getting loads of therapy and his WRAP has finally started.....for those that don't know or remember me......Andy is 2 1/2 and is Autistic and has severe food, texture issues.
I was doing some reading about hynosis with Autism and was wondering if anyone has done this or thought of this ???
I was considering doing some serious research about it....was hoping that maybe it could help my son get over whatever it is that blocks him from being able to eat.....I figured if hypnosis could help some quit eating maybe it could help some start to eat!!!
I would appreciate any input any of you may have......Thanks.....and lots of Blessings!
Sounds interesting!Brush the tongue with tooth brush decreases sensative buds. worked on our son. Will eat a lot more since then.
Hi Barb,
I felt maybe i should respond to this as my hubby and I have both went to hypnosis to loose weight..............first of all it worked wonders for dh..........he has lost 20lbs.......it didn't do squat for me...........I think it all depends on the person................now with that being said...........I am not sure how they would go about doing it for a child with autism..........I really wish i had some suggestion to help you.............Good luck..............
I don't know much about hypnosis, but would it hurt to try even if there are no guarantees?
My son is the same way. He attempts to try new foods, but when the food gets close to his mouth he backs away and most of the time he gags. He gags sometimes when he see's OTHER people eat. Poor guy survives on about five different foods (one of them is pediasure which is making me go broke
Good luck and keep us posted.
Stephanie
To Tammy. I quote.
"Hypnosis doesn't work on every average adult but you expect it to work on a kid that has autism"
How many adult people have you hypnotized?
So you had to eat apples. "When I was younger we had to eat it."
You can go to a psychologist for the next five years and have him analyze the heck out of you. It could cost you thousands.
Or you can go to a GOOD hypnotist and they will HELP YOU get rid of your phobia in about an hour.
I decided to see if there was anything on the web with PDD and hypnosis. I found your group and read some of the posts. I felt compelled to give my opinion. I practice hypnosis as a side line working up to my retirement. I have had great success helping people with many unusual maladies. Hypnosis is not just for weight loss and to stop smoking. I belong to a e-mail post group of alumni from Omni Hypnosis Training Center in DeLand Florida. So far I have not worked with any one yet with Autism or PDD.
There have been several postings on our group referring to Autism clients. If the client has a close to normal understanding of speech and the hypnotist can build a report with the client they can be helped with many aspects of their affliction. You have to find a good hypnotist first. The diploma on the wall may not be enough. Go to the Omni Hypnosis web site and contact them for information for a hypnotist in your area.
Children by far are the easiest subjects to hypnotize. Children can use their imagination far better than adults and hypnosis uses our powerful imagination to tap into the power of the sub-conscious mind to make the changes in the body.
As for the person that posted that her husband lost 20 lbs. with hypnosis but it didn't work for her. It was probably related to the hypnotist's training not hypnosis. There are hypnotists
Wally
Thank You Wally!!
I am glad there are more positive posts about this issue rather than the 1 negative from Tammy.
I appreciate your info.......my son has a good understanding of language and this may be something that could help him greatly.....
Hi Barb. Again as I put in the post. Check with Omni to see if there is any Omni grad in your area. If there is and they haven't yet worked with Autism or PDD. They will probably post on our group for information. Stay positive. That's the way things happen. Good luck.Stephanie....First Your Noah is adorable!!!! Second .....I completely understand....my son is the exact same way.....he can't even watch other people eat sometimes he gags or throws up and I have to make him turn away and not look. I do the brushing technique and joint compressions with Andy and we use a nuk brush as well, but he hasn't really made progress...he is actually eliminating things from his diet....he has about 5-8 things he will eat and thats it! \
Hang in there....hopefully soon something will work!
